Plot

A second civil war has transformed the United States into a fundamentalist authoritarian state known as Gilead. Their conservative ideology draws from the Bible and believes that women should be subservient to men. But part of their success in the war comes down to the fact that fertility rates are beginning to shrink. Women are reduced to the level of property, stripped of their rights, and forced into sexual servitude to keep birth rates buoyed. But not everyone is willing to accept the new world order. Despite being cursed to the life of a handmaid, Offred isn't going to give up on changing things.
