In 1980's New York City, the persecuted and shunned gay and trans community found their own sense of family and society in the ball culture. While they may not be remembered in the public eye, these traditionally non-white youth pushed against their family's traditions to express themselves in elaborate fashion. But their attitude and dancing would have just as much of an impact on how their performance is judged. As Reagan takes power, greed becomes the universal American virtue, and the AIDS epidemic ravages the LGBQT community, the ball culture offers a tenuous but necessary respite from the dangers of the outside world.
