Piper Chapman has just been sentenced to spend a year and a half behind bars because of her involvement in a drug smuggling operation. The white middle class housekeeper isn't the typical convict residing at her new prison, but hers isn't the only story either. As she learns to navigate the unique social hierarchy of prison, Piper learns the fascinating and often heartbreaking stories of the other inmates. But she'll also find herself at odds with some of the more violent offenders, and things will only become more complicated when people from Piper's past begin to resurface in her new life.
