The small boy was raised in luxury in the Forbidden City and worshiped by millions of people. He is protected from the violent political turmoil of the revolution until the Red Army captures him and puts him in prison in 1950. While in prison, he recalls his lavish youth in the style of flashbacks and flashforwards.
