The Color Purple (1985)

As a black girl in the 1900s, Celie wasn't present for slavery, but she still lives in dangerous and desperate conditions. Her family are poor farmers in Georgia, and her father has abused her mercilessly before handing her off to another violent man to be married to. Years of abuse leave Celie meek, but she eventually finds the courage to stand up to the abuse and blaze a path for herself. The road forward won't be easy, but the pain she suffers will be offset by the friendships and bonds that she builds throughout those decades of struggle and triumph.
