The 13th Warrior (1999)

It's the early 10th century, and Ahmad Ibn Fadlan is sent there ostensibly as an emissary to the Bulgars. Functionally, his assignment is an exile for getting involved with the wrong woman. Ahmad's journey is diverted when a roving gang of vikings captures him. While he initially finds them uncouth and they find him effete, they eventually come to respect one another's values and customs. Ahmed eventually earns a place among them and is introduced into viking society, but he'll soon find his commitment to his new land tested. Supernatural monsters from beyond the grave have risen up and threaten to devour the land.
