Full Metal Jacket (1987)

Gunnery Sergeant Hartman puts new recruits through a harrowing boot camp before their deployment to the Vietnam War. Hartman dubs one recruit "Private Joker," and Joker observes the mentally draining effects boot camp has on the recruits. One recruit, called "Private Pyle," suffers a breakdown and murders Hartman. Soon after, Joker becomes a correspondent for Stars and Stripes and witnesses the horrors of war in the field.
