City of God (2002)

Set in an impoverished Brazilian favela of Rio de Janeiro between the 1960s and 1980s, City of God revolves around the story of a quiet and unassuming boy nicknamed Rocket, who dreams of life as a photographer but risks becoming enmeshed in or outright consumed by the deadly corruption and criminal activities all around him. The sprawling cast of characters, including drug dealers, childhood friends, journalists, and both honest and corrupt police officers, reveals different sides to the frenetic life in the City of God. This film is based on a 1997 novel by Brazilian author Paulo Lins and contains some autobiographical elements.
